Announcing the winners of “Your research in one photo” competition – 2025
Once again, we received some beautiful and creative entries in our 2025 RAID Network photo competition! We get excited every year to see our members entries and learn more about their research!

Md Monirul Islam took out the top prize with his photo Flash Flooding in Bangladesh.
‘This photo was taken during my PhD field survey in the wetland areas of Bangladesh, where flash flooding is a severe and recurring problem. The image captures a poignant moment, a 7-year-old girl catching fish to help prepare a meal for her family, reflecting the harsh reality and struggle for food security in these vulnerable communities. Such scenes highlight the urgent need for resilience measures. As part of my PhD, we aimed to develop a damage-based crop insurance model to support farmers affected by flash floods and improve their capacity to cope with the growing climate-related risks in the region.’

Congratulations to our second prize winner Maree Bouterakos with her photo Cote D’Ivoire. ‘Behind every chocolate bar lies a complex reality. From West African farms to your hand, countless hours of arduous, precarious, and unseen labour bring chocolate and sweetness to life. This image represents the hidden human cost, a reminder to reflect on the journey of each chocolate bar and the hands that crafted it.’

Our People’s Choice Award went to Monique Berkhout with her photo Cheeky Cows. ‘This photo summarizes the research I work on both through my employment as a research scientist and through my PhD studies. My research spans ruminant nutrition refinement, mitigation of methane emissions, improving product yield and quality, and the evaluation of alternative pasture species that are resilient to climate variability. This photo shows a cow receiving her grain ration and feed additive in the dairy during milking, in an experiment where cows had their individual methane emissions measured via the modified sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) technique. This cow was clearly feeling extra cheeky on this day with her gesture as pictured!’
A huge thanks to the RAID Network team for judging this year’s competition, plus everyone who voted in the people’s choice!
We’re excited to bring back another round in 2026. Until next year, keep snapping!
