Early career researcher position in beekeeping research for development

Position title: Project Coordinator
Faculty/Unit: Faculty of Science and Engineering
Responsible to: Dr Cooper Schouten
Campus/location: Lismore

Bees for Sustainable Livelihoods Research Group at Southern Cross University are seeking expressions of interest from an early career researcher to contribute to a funded beekeeping research for development project seeking to improve livelihoods for beekeeping households in the Pacific and Australia. This work involves coordinating activities and collaborating with a diverse group of national and international researchers and organisations. The successful candidate will be able to work as part of a diverse team in research topics including, honey bee nutrition and floral calendar development, honey bee biosecurity and pest and disease management, queen bee breeding, post-harvest handling and quality assurance, marketing, branding and bee business, gender equity and participatory approaches to apiculture and apicultural education, training and extension.

SPECIAL WORK REQUIREMENTS

A valid Passport and Driver’s Licence, with an ability and willingness to travel as required in order to undertake duties.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Experience working with bees is useful but not required. Ideally, the appointee should possess the following qualifications, skills, abilities and experience:

  • An Honours or Masters degree in development studies, agriculture, environmental science, or related field
  • Strong English writing and oral communication skills
  • Strong organisational skills
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment

Strong candidates will also possess the following attributes:

  • Applied experience working in international agricultural research for development
  • A proven record of project management and research skills
  • Experience in community consultation and stakeholder engagement
  • Creativity, independence, and desire to learn

Depending on qualifications, a full-time casual position is available for a minimum of 12 months, however a fixed term position for annual renewal is possible dependent on progress made.
